What To Expect After Receiving Dentures

Posted on

Dentures are used to replace teeth that are missing. When all of the teeth in the upper or lower jaw are lost, a full denture is used. However, when some natural teeth still remain, the missing teeth are replaced with a partial denture.

If you are planning to receive dentures, you may not know what to expect during the first month or so after your appliance has been fitted. Here are a few things that you can expect to experience as you become accustomed to your false teeth:

First Day: Antibiotics and Pain Relievers

On the first day after you receive your dentures, you may be required to take antibiotics and pain relievers. Your dentist may prescribe these medications to treat and prevent infections, and to help quell the pain associated with any extractions.

Often, people who receive full dentures may require the extraction of any remaining teeth due to severe decay and periodontal infections. It is important to take your prescribed medications as directed to ensure that your mouth heals properly.

Your diet on your first day will likely consist of liquids and soft foods. Additionally, you may be asked to continue to wear your dentures until you see your dentist on the next appointment.

First Two Weeks: Healing

As your mouth becomes accustomed to the dentures, you may experience a few sore areas and an increase in salivary flow. If you notice significant areas of discomfort, you should contact your dentist.

A dental professional can adjust the appliance for maximum comfort. Keep in mind that multiple adjustments may be required. Additionally, your diet may continue to consist primarily of soft foods.

After the First Two Weeks: Returning to Normal

After the first couple of weeks with dentures, your salivary flow should start to normalize, and the sore areas of your mouth should be less uncomfortable. Additionally, your ability to eat comfortably and speak clearly should continue to improve.

Over time, you may develop specific preferences concerning your dentures. Some denture patients feel more comfortable using dental adhesives to help hold their dentures in place. Others may prefer specific types of denture-cleaning agents over others.

Once you receive your dentures, be sure to contact your dentist to discuss any issues that may arise. The professional advice can help make the transition to your false teeth easier. Nevertheless, you will need time to adjust to your new appliance.

If you need help or advice after receiving your dentures, schedule a consultation with your dentist as soon as possible.
